Two Cases of Otitic Brain Abscess


Abstract
The author have experienced two cases of brain abscess due to acute flare-up of the chronic suppurative otitis media associated with cholesteatoma.
In case 1, the 19-year-old male, the abscess was located in the, left t temporal lobe and the infection seemed to have spread there directly through the tegmen of the mastoid.
The Cases 11, the 13 year-old- male, had the abscess in the cerebellum, where the infection reached from the signoid sinus.
The culture of both abscesses proved proteus vulgaris.
The clinical manifestation of the temporal lobe abscess in Case 1 had, no significant focal sings while very interesting was the symptoms in Case 11, where the homolateral hemiplegia(spastic paralysis) and paraphasia were present.
The radical mastoidectomy and the evacuation of the abscess through the mastoid¢¥ cavity brought about the uneventful recovery in Case I with no sequelae for one year postoperatively, while the Case 11 healed with slight motor disturbance of homolateral extremities 6 months after the operation.
